After the fall of Troy Odysseus and his small fleet of warships
are sailing away from the bloody Trojan shores and the horrors of a
ten year lasting war. Following an unsuccessful raid on the land of
the Ciconians, on the Thracian shores the ships set course to Ithaca.
But as they are trying to negotiate the Cape Maleas, on the southern
tip of the Greek mainland strong north winds push the small fleet
further and further south until they reach the North African coast at
a point where a strange tribe lives.
The Lotus Eaters are an easy going community of people who spend
their time idly, swimming, love-making, eating lotus fruits and
drinking palm-tree wine. Odysseus and his men are thrilled and
delighted to land in such a paradisal place and they soon adopt the
ways of the natives, allowing themselves to become addicted to the
miraculous effects of the lotus fruit, sinking slowly but steadily
into a drug induced nirvana.
Athena interferes and in her attempt to save Odysseus she takes
him to her aunt, the goddess Hestia, who treats him in a way that will clean his system from the addiction to the Lotus fruit. This is the
second --and perhaps most significant-- close encounter of Odysseus
with the strange world of the «Gods».
