Book 9: Scylla and Charybde

"We were lucky to have favourable winds for otherwise a dozen men wouldn't have been able to man the ship. It was also fortunate that the sky was heavily overcast for three days and nights providing thus an ideal cover against the aerial search parties who could be heard flying incessantly above our heads.

As the sun was setting on the fourth day we came into view of the dark shape of the island where Scylla and Charybde kept their watch."

Book 8: On the Island of the Sirens

«Before we left Aea, Circe gave me detailed instructions for the route we should follow on our way back home.
First we had to sail due north, taking advantage of the sea currents and trade winds, until we reached a group of islands known as "Islands of the Sirens". These Sirens are not some mythical creatures, as so many bards and artists depicted them, but real women, though of outstandingly good looks and with a unique gift for singing. They are the descendants of a once great race which vanished in a natural catastrophe.»

Book 6: On the Island of Circe

Odysseus escapes from the Land of the Laestrygonians, thanks to the complicity of Queen Melanippe, with only one ship out of the twelve he had when he started on his way back home from Troy and with just a few of his companions.

The winds push him northwards this time and after a while he arrives on a strange island where a dangerous goddess lives in solitude. Circe is a sorceress, a goddess feared by mortals and immortals alike. However this dangerous female seems to be affected by the charms and personality of the crafty Achaean wanderer and he, in turn, responds to her attentions. Then, one day Hera, the Queen of the Gods, arrives on the sorcerer's island to request Odysseus' help on a delicate matter on behalf of the Olympians.

Βοοκ 5: In The Land Of The Laestrygonians

Strong west winds push the small fleet of Odysseus' ships beyond the Pillars of Hercules which marked the end of the World. Now they are sailing into the vast Ocean trying to keep the shore into view whenever possible. Thanks to the skills and nautical knowledge of the chief captain, the Phoenician Hamon, the ships manage to turn south, taking advantage of the changed winds. Then, after a long time in the sea they find a well protected bay with calm waters.

They are greeted there and are offered hospitality by a barbarian race of very tall, dark skinned people who introduce themselves as the Laestrygonians. The Achaeans accept the offer, not suspecting the mortal danger they were putting themselves into.

Book 4: The Floating Island Of Aeolos

Odysseus's ships are pushed further and further west by the freak storm caused by the explosion of the gods' weapons depot in Cyclopea. As they approach the «End of the World» their path is crossed with that of the enormous «floating island» of Aeolos where Odysseus and his men are received courteously and are allowed to replenish their provisions of food and water.

The stay aboard this marvellous artificial floating device is cut short when some crew members attempt to abuse their hosts hospitality. Aeolos, always courteous, hands over to Odysseus a set of navigating instruments to help him find his way back home. Unfortunately his men, once again, driven by stupidity and greed ruin their chances of a safe return and thus the small fleet is blown back into the vast unknown.

Book 3: Οn The Island Of The Cyclops

Blown by adverse winds the small fleet of Odysseus' ships finally arrive at a strange island spread with crumbling megalithic structures of an undetermined age. As it turns out this is Cyclopea, the island of the Cyclops, a half human, half divine race that the «gods» employ as guardians to their weapons of mass destruction depot.

As Odysseus and his companions soon find out these Cyclops are of enormous stature and brutish disposition. Trapped inside the huge artificial cave of Polyphemus and his insatiable wife Aetherope, the Crafty One has to work out a plan to escape a fate worse than death, but in the process he accidentally creates an incredible havoc and sends the «gods» running.

Once again this story, as told by Odysseus himself, shares very little in common with the same episode as taught in our schools and universities --the Homeric version that is.
